Meet your DAW.
What am I looking at?

Today your music-software stops being scary.
By the end, it will feelyour studio.
First idea

One file = one song's home

A project in your DAW holds everything about one song: the sounds, the notes, the settings.
For your first look we don't start from zero. We open a song that already plays.
Download it from your quest gear, right beside this map. There's one file per DAW: grab the one for yours, and open it.

tracks: one lane, one instrument
regions: the blocks ARE the music

Four landmarks: transport, playhead, tracks, regions. That's the whole tour.
How to read it

Time runs → that way

Left to right is time: the song's story from start to end.
Top to bottom is instruments: the layers playing together.
You're reading music like a comic strip.
The most important key you'll ever press

Play. Stop. Play again.

space
That's it. That's the button.
You'll press it ten thousand times as a producer, starting now.
The colored blocks

Regions are LEGO bricks of sound

01Drag one somewhere else and the song changes.
02Grab the top-right corner and pull. It loops.
03Music here is built, not just played.
The magic buttons

the m-key and s-key: take the song apart

Mute switches one region or layer off. Solo plays them alone.
Press them while the beat runs. A song is built in layers, and you'll hear it.
The rule that kills fear

You cannot break this.

⌘ Zundoes anything. Any mistake, any mess: one key back.
⌘ Ssaves your project. Do it like a heartbeat.
So: click everything. Worst case is one ⌘Z.

Your first beat

Kick, snare, hi-hat: you put your first drums on the grid,
and before the session ends you'll hear a beat that's yours.
(and somewhere in Logic there's a library of thousands of loops… we'll go digging soon)
